All Deviations

The human mind cannot comprehend the meaning of nothing. What is nothing? It is clear? Is is a large expanse of black? What is outside of the nothing? Humans perceive everything as material. It's only natural. We automatically assume that blind people see nothing but black, but in actuality, they see nothing, if this nothing can really be seen. The same situation applies to the deaf. Do they hear nothing? Or just silence? Is silence an actual sound? Humans feared this nothing, so they created gods. Funny, how God was created by man instead of the other way around. Spawned from fear of the unknown, fear of emptiness, fear of being alone. Mankind created the soul, created the concepts of Heaven and Hell out of fear of being worthless. What happens when you die? Nothing happens. This is incomprehensible, I must be worth something! I cannot possibly disappear into thin air. I can't simply cease to exist, I must continue, move on, somewhere. A human can't just stop. Try lying in bed and think of nothing. To clear your mind is impossible, because in order to clear your mind you're actually thinking of clearing your mind. Even sitting and listening to music but not thinking of anything else does not clear the mind. Your mind is still following the music and lyrics. Sleeping does not bring nothing. Whether you dream or not, you are still thinking. Always thinking, consciously, subconsciously, aware, unaware. Constant, never breaking. What would happen is a human could understand the concept of nothing? What would they be, enlightened? Insane, perhaps? Or thinking on an entirely different level?

Just a little philosophical ramble for writer's workshop. I had fun doing this. Pretty much just my views on the concept of 'nothingness'.

Actually, everyone technically dreams.
It's just that some remember more than others. 8D

This'll sound really stupid, but for one brief second some years ago, my thoughts actually disappeared into nothingness. O.O At least, I could've sworn it was. It was really cool....but I dont know how to do it anymore. DDDx

When you said "enlightenment" it reminded me of months ago (I know it was during the earlier winter) I was on the bus riding home, listening to music as always. I don't remember what song it was but I know it was in Japanese but while looking out the window letting my mind wander, it didn't exactly go blank but my thoughts somehow raced ahead of me I guess and I lost track of them and for a moment, only a moment, it was as if I could understand the song as clearly as I would understand you if you came up and spoke to me in English. I also heard them in a different way than I ever had before. Just as I realized it, it was gone but it was one of the strangest things ever.

Hardly related...

Wonderful prose~ I really love it.

Apparently small children have an easier time doing this.

Heh xD
I just end up spacing out unless I'm reading. Even then though I'm practically in another world.

It seems to me like the invention of Heaven and Hell is more of a device for keeping people in line and ensuring that they follow the moral code that was put in place by the church (though I see its effectiveness as being a bit questionable). The most effective way of making people follow those beliefs is to threaten them with some sort of terrible punishment. Obviously it still provides people with an idea of what happens after death aside from rotting, and it's certainly an unsettling thought for most people that for all that they accomplish in life they're simply going to be a rotting, decaying carcass after they die. Ultimately we're not doing anything more than deluding ourselves and creating a fantasy that provides comfort.
